What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Brazilian Butt Lift is one of the most rapidly rising procedures in North and South America. It involves three main steps:
- Liposuction of fat from one body part;
- This fat is then carefully prepared using state of the art technology and maintenance of stem cells to increase the longevity of the augmentation;
- After the preparation, the purified fat is lipo-injected into the gluteal (butt) area, which is customized differently and specifically to each patient according to his or her anatomy and desire of augmentation and lift.
What are the potential benefits of a Butt Lift?
The Brazilian Butt Lift taps into the benefits of liposuction and removing one’s own fat from stubborn areas in the body such as the abdomen, arms, thighs, and back and auto-transplanting this fat into the buttocks regions to enhance the shape and augment the size of the butt while creating a more sculpted body shape. The results of the butt augmentation are generally permanent. There are no implants used in BBLs. Your own fat cells are used to enhance your buttock area.
How is the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure performed?
The Brazilian butt lift is generally performed under general anaesthesia. It takes on average two to three hours to perform. Patients are first placed on their backs and liposuction is performed in the desired areas usually the abdomen (stomach) and flanks (sides of the tummy). Liposuction of the arms, thighs and chest can also be performed in this position. Then the patient is carefully positioned in the prone position (stomach on the operative table with the buttock and back facing upward). Liposuction is generally performed in the lower back, upper thighs and other areas requiring fat removal. After all the fat is harvested, the fat is carefully processed in a centrifuge where only the healthy fat cells and the stem cells are isolated and prepared for injection. The final process involves injection of the fat into multiple layers of the buttock tissue to increase its size and shape where desired thus creating a lifted appearance.
In order to ensure optimal butt lift results, this surgery should be performed by a plastic surgeon such as Dr. Hani Sinno, M.D., who helps patients sculpt and enhance the appearance of their gluteal (butt) area with a Brazilian Butt Lift at his private practice in Montreal, Quebec.
What does the recovery from a Brazilian Butt Lift entail?
There is a minimal recovery time of around four weeks. Patients should refrain from sports or sexual activity for at least two weeks following the procedure to minimize complications, however they should be up and about walking the same day of the surgery. The risks are very minimal, rare and can include but not limited to bleeding, infection, and skin dimpling.
Following your butt lift and liposuction procedure, the liposuction treated area will generally be wrapped firmly to reduce bruising and swelling, and you may be given support hose, a special girdle, or another type of compression garment to wear for up to 6 weeks. The buttocks will be left without any compressive garments, as pressure should be avoided on this area for at least 4-6 weeks post op. In fact Dr. Sinno recommends to his patients to wait at least 4-6 weeks to put any pressure on the buttock so no sitting for 4-6 weeks.
Post-surgical bruising, swelling, and fluid drainage is normal for the first 7-10 days, and you may be given antibiotics and pain medication to ameliorate any discomfort and prevent infection. Most patients find that they are able to return to work within a few days, and gradually resume normal activities when it is comfortable to do so. The enhanced contours of your new physique will be apparent after the post-surgical fluid retention and swelling subside. In order to preserve your butt lift liposuction results, you will be advised to avoid gaining a significant amount of weight, and to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Your gluteal (butt) enhancement surgery results will be apparent immediately after your surgery, and will continue to improve over the next few weeks, as any remaining swelling decreases.
What is the post-operative advice and care after a Brazilian Butt Lift?
– Day Surgery
Brazilian butt lift Liposuction surgery can range anywhere from 1-4 hours (depending on the site and amount of fat to be removed and re-injected), after which, you may be released (depending on your medical condition and health state) to a friend or family member and may return home to continue your recovery.
Dr. Sinno and his team will apply a special dressing and initial bandages that should be kept dry and clean for the first week. At that point the bandages will be removed and your post-operative state will be evaluated. Compressive garments will need to be worn for a minimal amount of 6 weeks after your liposuction procedure.
Because the liposuction performed as part of a butt lift involves the injection of a special fluid that liquefies the fat to be able to suction it out, a lot of residual post-operative leakage from the incisions is to be expected. Sometimes the bandages can become too moist so they must be changed as needed.
– Showers & Washing
The bandages are usually removed within a week after surgery. Dr. Sinno recommends that all bandages should remain dry and clean. Showers should be avoided, until authorized by Dr. Sinno. This is usually after all bandages are removed at the first postoperative visit. Until then, sponge baths are recommended.
We recommend using white unscented shampoo and soap, along with running water on the incisions after the bandages are removed and only when given medical authorization to do so.
Dr. Sinno recommends that patients refrain from all activities that may increase their heart rate or blood pressure, including exercise, sexual activity, stressful situations, etc., for at least the first two weeks after your surgery.
However, it is recommended that patients walk and perform their usual activities within the limitation of the medical advice given and in tolerance to their comfort. No lifting of more than 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) is recommended for at least two weeks after surgery.
Sleeping on the surgical site should be avoided if possible for at least two weeks after your procedure.
Patients should avoid sitting on their buttocks and sleeping on their backs for at least 4-6 weeks after butt lift surgery.
It is recommended that patients do not drive when taking narcotic pain medications and when wearing bulky dressings that may hinder their normal reflexes and reactivity for at least 4-6 weeks.
– General Healing
You may experience some swelling and bruising that will peak two to three days after your butt lift, and usually subsides within 2-6 weeks. Post-operative swelling, pain, bruising and duration may differ, depending on the patient and the extent of the butt lift and liposuction performed.
– You can expect to be able to see visible aesthetic improvements in your surgical region immediately following your butt lift and liposuction. These results should continue to progress over the following weeks, as the incision site heals and the swelling decreases. Swelling can take six weeks to subside. Dr. Sinno advises his patients that the final results should be expected approximately one year following the procedure, at which point all scars and incisions should be mature.
What are the risks and potential complications of a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure?
All medical and surgical procedures have inherent risks and potential complications that are associated with them. It is imperative that you understand the potential risks, complications and consequences that can arise after the medical or surgical procedure you undertake. This understanding will better allow you to be able to provide informed consent, based on the comparison to the potential benefit of the desired procedure.
Although the materialization of inherent risks is rare and developing complications is unlikely, these are real events that can occur. Dr. Sinno will help you to understand the risk/benefit profile of your desired procedure.
