What are the potential benefits of a brow lift?

The appearance of lines and creases across the forehead and between the eyes can develop during the natural aging process. This can distort and modify our facial appearance, causing us to appear sad, angry or tired when we are not actually experiencing those feelings. This problem is often compounded by the development of lateral skin folds (hooding), which can form in the outer corners of the eyes, between the eyebrow and eyelid.

Brow lift surgery was designed to address and correct these troublesome aesthetic issues. It can effectively restore a more refreshed, youthful facial appearance.

Brow lifts minimize the appearance of forehead creases and frown lines (lines/creases on the bridge of your nose between the eyebrows) and can raise the eyebrows to correct any hooding in the upper eyelid region, thereby creating a more alert and rejuvenated facial appearance.

Often performed in conjunction with other facial cosmetic procedures (i.e. facelift, eyelid surgery, skin resurfacing), brow lift surgery can be a highly effective component of an overall facial rejuvenation treatment plan.

What are the procedural options of a BROW LIFT?

There are three primary options for brow lift procedures:

  • What is a Coronal Brow Lift? The entire forehead is raised through an incision that is made across the top of the head along the hairline. Some of the forehead muscles are weakened during the procedure in order to minimize the appearance of horizontal forehead lines.
  • What is a Temporal Brow Lift? The forehead is lifted through a series of smaller incisions that are made in the temple region of the forehead and scalp. The advantage of this technique is that the majority of the incisions are concealed within the scalp. However, the results of temporal brow lift procedures are not as long lasting as coronal lifts, and only the outer portion of the brow is raised.
  • What Endoscopic Brow Lift? This procedure was developed as a less invasive alternative to the coronal technique. During this procedure, a tiny camera mounted on the end of an endoscope is inserted through very small incisions, in order to lift and reposition the forehead, and to remove the corrugator supercilli and procerus muscles (the muscles responsible for causing the frown lines between the eyebrows).

After evaluating your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals, Dr. Sinno will review your brow lift options, and will select the appropriate technique to help you achieve your surgical objectives.

What is the recovery time for brow lift surgery?

Following your brow lift surgery, you will wear a soft wrap around your head for two to four days. You will also be advised to elevate your head as much as possible, in order to minimize post-surgical bruising or swelling. Your surgical staples or sutures will be removed approximately seven days after your brow lift procedure, and most patients find that they can gradually resume physical activity two to three weeks following surgery (this time frame varies depending upon your body’s individual capacity to heal itself). Coronal brow lifts can typically require longer recovery periods than the endoscopic and temporal procedures.

What is the operative advice and care after a brow lift surgery?

Day Surgery
Brow lift surgery generally takes one hour, after which, you may be released (depending on your medical condition and health state) to a friend or family member and may return home to continue your recovery.

– When do the bandages come off after brow lift?
You will have a follow-up visit with Dr. Sinno, typically around one week after your brow lift surgery. At this time, you will be able to see the initial aesthetic enhancements to the shape and position of your brows. These results should continue to improve over the next six weeks, as any residual swelling abates. Brow lift patients typically return to work after seven to ten days, although you will be advised to limit strenuous activities for the next few weeks.

– When can I shower and wash after a brow lift?
The bandages usually are removed within a week after surgery. Dr. Sinno recommends that all bandages should remain dry and clean after your surgery until your first follow-up appointment. Showers should be avoided until authorized by Dr. Sinno. This usually occurs after all bandages are removed at the first post-operative visit. Until then, sponge baths are recommended.

White non-scented shampoo and soap are recommended to be used along with running water on the incisions after the bandages are removed and when given medical authorization to do so.

– When can I resume normal activity and exercise after brow lift surgery?
You will be advised to refrain from rubbing the brows and forehead for at least six weeks following your brow lift procedure.

Dr. Sinno recommends that patients refrain from all activities that may increase their heart rate or blood pressure including exercise, sexual activity, stressful situations, etc. during the first post-operative week.

However, it is recommended that patients walk and perform their usual activities within the limitation of the medical advice given and their tolerance to their comfort. No lifting more than 10 lbs. (4 kg) is recommended for at least two weeks after the surgery.

Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first week after surgery to help decrease the post-operative swelling.

When can I drive after brow lift?
It is recommended that patients do not drive when taking narcotic pain medications and when having bulky dressings that may hinder their normal reflexes and reactivity.

– General Healing
You may experience some swelling and bruising that will peak two to three days after your surgery, and usually subsides within two to six weeks. Post-operative swelling, pain, bruising and duration may vary depending on the patient and extent of the brow lift.

You will be expected to be able to see visible aesthetic improvements immediately following your brow lift, and these results should continue to progress over the following weeks, as the incision site heals and the swelling decreases. Swelling can take six weeks to subside and Dr. Sinno advises his patients that final results should be expected at the one year point post-operative period when all scars and incisions should be mature.

What are the risks and potential complications after a brow lift?

All medical and surgical procedures have inherent risks and potential complications associated with them. It is imperative that you understand the potential risks, complications and consequences that can arise after the medical or surgical procedure you undertake. This understanding will better allow you to be able to provide informed consent based on the comparison to the potential benefit of the desired procedure.

Although the materialization of inherent risks is rare and developing complications is unlikely, these are real events that can occur. Dr. Sinno will help you to understand the risk/benefit profile of your desired procedure.
